Nancy D. Suttenfield

Ms. Suttenfield is an accomplished, nationally regarded higher education executive who brings diverse experience and insights based on nearly 25 years as a chief financial officer at several leading public and private research universities and the nation’s foremost museum complex. She has served in this role at Case Western Reserve University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the Smithsonian Institution, and Wake Forest University.

Throughout her career, Nancy has led change management for complex financial,business and capital improvement strategies, multi-year resource management, and systems and process initiatives. She has vast experience communicating with governing boards, campus leadership and constituencies, ratings agencies, and both federal and state government officials about a wide range of policy and financial matters. She has been a conference speaker at various professional conferences and has published thought provoking articles on complex leadership and management challenges in the National Association of College and University Business Officers’ magazine Business Officer. From her prior service in academe, Nancy has developed keen insights into the importance of developing an understanding of the unique culture, traditions, and priorities of each institution and carefully building partnerships and inclusive communications processes. Nancy attributes her career successes to collaborations that represent an integrated focus on both academic mission and fiscal responsibility, along with the principles of accountability, clarity, transparency, and sustainability. This focus contributes to a good personal fit and effectiveness for both senior executives and the institutions they are leading.

Nancy’s diverse accomplishments range from navigating complex changes associated with all facets of the nation’s largest capital improvement program at a research university/medical center (UNC Chapel Hill), involving $2.1 billion in new construction of 7 million square feet (50 percent growth), to an emotion charged but essential yet equitable overhaul of faculty and staff benefits (CWRU).

Ms. Suttenfield earned her BS degree in mathematics education at Indiana University of Pennsylvania and her MA in economics at Virginia Commonwealth University.
